BCRA Board of Directors Announces Changes for the 2010 season
Vacaville, CA – August 4, 2009
Over the past several racing seasons it has become increasingly evident that the cost of operating a Midget is keeping people away from our sport. Over the past winter and after being reelected as President of the club, I promised the general membership that the BCRA board and I would work hard on formulating a plan and developing solutions to the high cost of fielding a Midget. It has taken a little longer than hoped, however to that end, the Bay Cities Racing association Board of Directors along with Tom and Linda Manning and Capital City Midget President Rick Young met recently to finalize plans for the 2010 BCRA Midget racing season.
After listening to the clubs owners and drivers, the BCRA Board has taken the following steps to help cut the cost of running a Midget. 1) BCRA will go back to the traditional way of numbering cars, meaning you will need to use one car (a combo car) to win a BCRA Midget car owner championship. Starting next year each car will need to have a separate number. The board also added to the current BCRA combo car specs that a combo car will be a left hand steer car and utilize a Jacobs’s ladder on the rear axle. At this time the Board feels like the major cost factors are associated with running pavement, so, to help with some of these costs we have instituted the following rules to help cut some of these costs associated with racing on pavement, slow the cars and help even up competition. 1) The current American Racer M32 will be the required spec tire on the right rear only. The three other tires will remain the same. 2) Non combo cars will be allowed a 55% max left side weight bias. 3) Non combo cars will not be allowed a weight jacker. 4) Non combo cars will be allowed one cockpit adjustment. (Shock or brake bias). 5) Practicing at a BCRA scheduled track will be prohibited starting the week prior to the beginning of the racing season and extend to the last race of the season. No changes were made to the current dirt rules.
The board has also taken a stand on the current high cost of Midget engines, by adding the Hemi head Mopar and the 166ci Pushrod Toyota Midget engine to the list of unauthorized engines.
The Board is hopeful that these changes will again put an emphasis on running a combo car thus cutting fixed costs in half. To further help cut costs in 2010, the board has discussed cutting the number of races to no more than a total of 18 with approximately 6-7 on pavement. We will also work hard on keeping travel to a minimum.
Finally the BCRA board is proud to announce for 2010 it has started a new division of Midget that will be known as the BCRA ASCS Midget division. Doing this will give BCRA a friendly affiliation with a national Midget organization; it is being formed in cooperation with the Capital Cities Midget club. We are very proud to be on the ground floor of this new venture and excited by the new association with Emmett Hahn and the successful ASCS organization. The ASCS division will run along with the Midgets until a time when the division can stand alone. The BCRA board will be working closely with Rick Young and the ASCS to establish rules for the new division. Look for rules and more details in the near future. Please direct questions to a Midget board member.
